Christian Dior led the golden age of haute couture in Paris after introducing the 'New Look' in 1947 - protruding breasts and hips, a cinched waist, small shoulders, and a large, long skirt. The “La Cigale” dress as seen in photo below came from the collections "Profile Line," which have a distinctive sharp silhouette. In contrast to the slender upper body, the skirt spreads out three-dimensionally. Monsieur Dior employed pattern masters to shape pattern pieces to mold the bodice to the body and likewise to allow for the dilation at the hips.

"La Cigale" has the underpinnings of couture, but with its standard moiré, long, fitted sleeve, and smooth bodice and skirt cut, a facade of this cocktail piece could easily be adapted for the department store in America. Monsieur Dior wanted to veer away from masculine edge in woman’s attire that had been devastated after the war and encourage women to embrace more feminine styles again. It received conflicting reviews as “masterpiece of architectural silhouette” vs “design against the times”, but in a clear form until now. It has a huge impact on women's clothing.

"In the midst of a trend of “One-mile wear” in fashion. we thought that it would be nice to have one decent skirt in a woman’s wardrobe embracing feminine silhouette - but not in crazy way. Made in high-count twill gabardine with dry-elasticity touch completed in high craftsmanship. It will make you swing yourself and smile once you put your both hands into the pockets considerably placed in tucks on the side panel. We recommend you to dress down with white t-shirt or jumper paring with decent flat shoe!"
